Kalanchoe care: what to do after the flowers fade

Care for Kalanchoe blossfeldiana with indirect light and succulent watering, and understand why reblooming needs more than extra feed.

Plant covered: Kalanchoe blossfeldiana.

Florist kalanchoe is often treated as a bouquet with roots. When its flowering display fades, the plant still needs care suited to its succulent leaves. Keep Kalanchoe blossfeldiana on the label: this guide does not cover every plant sold under the much wider kalanchoe name.

Keep the plant in good light after the display

Bright, indirect light or partial shade suits it; prolonged harsh sun can scorch leaves. Avoid moving it to a dark shelf once the flowers are less showy. Compare the foliage and new growth as well as the remaining blooms when judging how it is settling in.

Use a succulent's drying rhythm

Choose a well-drained cactus or succulent medium. Let the soil dry between waterings, then water thoroughly and allow drainage. Flowering does not cancel the need to check the pot. If the medium is still wet, more water is not a useful response to a fading flower cluster.

Treat reblooming as a separate project

Remove spent flowers when appropriate. Flower initiation depends on a sustained pattern of long nights and bright days, so extra fertilizer alone cannot guarantee new blooms. First establish healthy growth and a stable routine. If you later attempt reblooming, consult the source guide for the complete light-and-dark treatment.

Your next useful check

Keep one note about the flowers and one about leaf growth. Record moisture before watering. That separation helps you avoid treating the end of one flowering display as evidence that the whole plant is declining.

If you need another pair of eyes, gather a whole-plant photo, a close-up and recent care dates with our plant observation checklist. Leave anything you do not know marked unknown.

The species-specific growing guidance draws on NC State Extension’s Florist kalanchoe profile, consulted 4 November 2026. The check prompts are Plont’s practical suggestions, not a fixed watering prescription. Cultivar, container and growing conditions can change what your plant needs.
