Plant covered: Monstera adansonii.
Monstera adansonii care includes deciding where its climbing growth can go. Check the botanical name before borrowing advice for the larger Monstera deliciosa. A suitable position, a clear route for the stems and notes about the container give you a better starting point than inspecting leaf holes in isolation.
Know the vine and its starting conditions
NC State identifies Monstera adansonii as a tropical climber with naturally perforated leaves and aerial roots. It recommends bright, indirect light, warmth, humidity and moist but well-drained medium. A stake, trellis or moss pole can provide climbing structure. Direct sun and cold drafts are cautions in the profile. Local exposure matters more than applying a North Carolina seasonal calendar indoors.
Draw the route before making changes
Look at the space around the pot and decide whether you intend the vine to climb. Sketch the route on paper, noting nearby furniture and where you can reach the container. If you plan a support change, document the starting arrangement first and ask for practical help when unsure. Repeatedly moving the same stems without a clear plan leaves you with a poorer record of what happened.
Use a whole-leaf comparison
Photograph one complete leaf and its position on the stem, plus a whole-plant view. A close-up of a hole alone leaves out useful context. Record whether you are describing a familiar opening, a newly noticed mark or something you cannot classify. If a change is unexplained or spreading, use the broader record to ask for advice rather than deciding that all openings have the same cause.
A worked observation
Illustrative example: a labelled Monstera adansonii grows on a shelf near filtered light. On 5 November, the owner notices the leading stem has reached another pot. Its medium is moist, and one perforated leaf looks unchanged from an earlier photograph. The owner adds no water, photographs the arrangement and asks the nursery about a suitable climbing support before rearranging it. They choose 7 November for another container inspection. This invented observation does not diagnose the leaf or promise a growth response; the date is not a watering rule.
Your next useful check
Confirm the botanical label, photograph the current growing direction and inspect the container. Choose one complete leaf as a reference. Keep any future support change dated so later observations have context.
