Spider plant care: brown tips, bright rooms and baby plants

A spider plant care guide for positioning, moisture checks, browned tips and observing plantlets without overfeeding.

By Plont · Published

Plant covered: Chlorophytum comosum.

A spider plant can be forgiving and still show brown tips. Those tips do not mean the whole plant has failed, and they do not identify one cause on their own. Give the arching leaves space, inspect the mix and keep a record of what changed before buying a treatment.

Leave space for the arching leaves

A position with moderate, indirect light lets you enjoy the plant without exposing it to harsh direct sun. A hanging basket works if you can still reach it to inspect and water. Do not place it so high that every care decision becomes a guess about the soil.

Keep moisture and drainage together

Spider plants prefer moisture but need a draining growing pot. Check the mix instead of assuming a basket dries at the same speed as a pot on a shelf. After watering, allow runoff to escape before replacing the pot. Record when the basket feels heavier or lighter so you learn this container.

Investigate tips without chasing perfect leaves

Water containing fluoride can contribute to tip burn, and excess fertilizer is unhelpful too. Compare your water and feeding history before changing several things. Spider plants make plantlets, but their absence is not proof that the plant needs more fertilizer. Keep the parent healthy before focusing on propagation.

Your next useful check

Photograph the newest leaf beside an older tipped leaf. Note your water source and last feeding date, or leave the date unknown. The next new growth is a clearer comparison than an already damaged tip.

If you need another pair of eyes, gather a whole-plant photo, a close-up and recent care dates with our plant observation checklist. Leave anything you do not know marked unknown.

Make a care routine with Plont

Add your spider plant in Plont through Browse or a photo identification you verify. Give the basket its own care check and record whether you watered or found the mix still moist.

Care reference

The species-specific growing guidance draws on NC State Extension’s Spider plant profile, consulted 4 November 2026. The check prompts are Plont’s practical suggestions, not a fixed watering prescription. Cultivar, container and growing conditions can change what your plant needs.
